Chapter 11

AS IT TURNED OUT, the island didn’t have all that much vegetation on it. It had stretches of normal-looking forest, containing tall grass and familiar trees, that didn’t seem to differ much from the Gurnak Forest. Birds were singing above my head; they never stopped, even when I was right next to them. The smell of well-watered plants and healthy moss was ever-present, and it called to mind memories of fun tourist hikes I’d been on as a kid.

There wasn’t a hint of a path or road anywhere. Nor, for the time being, was there any hint of where I should start my search for the missing Demons. I wasn’t going to spend five hours walking in circles around the island, however, so I kept plowing straight ahead.

I based this decision on a simple assumption: namely, that Malphagor’s daughter probably wouldn’t have hung around on the very edge of the island the entire time. Well, that, plus the probability that the control center was somewhere in the center of the island, or at least not too far from it. Why would the game have created an entire island, only to stick the control center in some lighthouse right on the edge?

After climbing up a big tree that towered above the others, I looked out across the island from above.

The island’s shape was reminiscent of Honshu (the largest of the Japanese Islands), although it was only a fraction of the size. By my rough estimate, the six-hour time limit would have been just about enough to walk straight across it from shore to shore. Several sizable rivers criss-crossed its surface in a number of places. Through the very occasional break in the vegetation, I could see some truly ancient ruins, all of which were overgrown with vines and badly dilapidated.

Most importantly, though, there was still a stone obelisk rising from what had clearly once been a massive, majestic stone complex. It would probably have looked very impressive in its heyday; now, however, I could see even from a distance that several large blocks were missing from its original structure. I couldn’t tell whether they had been broken out deliberately, or simply crumbled with age.

Only after about an hour did I finally run into the monsters that had given the Demons such trouble.

Hanging from a big branch above my head was part of an absolutely massive serpent. The section I could see was about as thick as my torso. Its gray-green scales provided perfect camouflage; it was the shape of the body, rather than its color, that had caught my attention. The snake itself was sound asleep, and I probably could have passed right by it (or played it safe and gone around it) without waking it up.

But leaving a monster like that behind me would have been incredibly foolish - especially if I didn’t at least make an attempt to deal with it first. Besides, I wanted to make sure that my magic would actually be enough to save me in battles with the island’s denizens before I got into any serious fighting.
